Criminal law and
maritime law

Two professions in conversation: legal practice and seafaring.

Admitted to the Bar of Rome. My work covers criminal law and maritime law — two fields that, in my experience, meet often: casualties and incidents at sea, dealings with port authorities, and proceedings that begin on board or around a vessel.

Before practising law I sailed and served as a Master Mariner, and I hold a master's degree in maritime law. That perspective stays with me in daily practice: I know shipboard procedure, the language of a crew and the real timescales of a vessel, as well as the rules that govern them.

My professional background was shaped through work with several firms: the international practice MR International Lawyers in Genoa, the criminal-law firm of Avv. Pasquale Cardillo Cupo, the firm of Avv. Ugo Giuseppe Centore, in the insurance and private-law field, and the firm of Avv. Luigi Casale. From 2022 to 2024 I also served as a judicial officer (funzionario giudiziario) in the criminal division of the Tribunal, first at the office of the preliminary-investigations judge and then with the single-judge trial court — an experience that let me see the process from within, from the side of those who administer it.

On the maritime side, my practice runs alongside a long-standing commitment to search and rescue at sea. I am a board member of the humanitarian organisation Sea Punk e.V., and I have served as master of vessels for several search-and-rescue organisations, including Sea-Watch, Refugee Rescue, Louise Michel and Sea Punk.

Education. Law degree (Laurea Magistrale in Giurisprudenza); master’s in Maritime, International and Logistics Law at the University of Bologna – Alma Mater Studiorum; the “Vittorio Emanuele Orlando” Bar School at the Court of Cassation, in Rome. I also hold a degree in Sport Science and am a federal instructor for the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) and the British Royal Yachting Association (RYA).

How I can assist.

A few things, said clearly.

Every instruction starts with an honest assessment: what can realistically be achieved, in what time and on what terms. I prefer to say it upfront, even when the answer is not the expected one.

Clients are kept informed of the state of the proceedings and of the next steps. Fees and the criteria used to calculate them are agreed in writing when the instruction is accepted.

In maritime matters it is often useful to speak directly with the master or the crew: reconstructing what happened on board is the starting point of almost every defence.
